Salt Lake and the surrounding area have a rich history concerning Gay, Lesbian, Bi-sexual and Transgendered (“GLBT”) individuals. As in other locations, there have been lows, such as discrimination, repression and hate. But there have also been many highs, such as partnerships with important support groups (Salt Lake City for Human Rights (“TOHR”); Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (“PFLAG”); Prime Timers; religious institutions; and many others), important speakers and programs, parades and social gatherings, advocacy and outreach activities, and the establishment of a GLBT Community Center. The GLBT community has been served by many outstanding individuals, gay and straight, each with their own history and perspective on where we have been and where we need to go. To go forward, it is very important to capture the history of our past, which will serve as the foundation for the future. This history will serve the GLBT community and the Salt Lake area as a whole as we seek to insure the equal rights of all of our citizens. Diversity is strength in any community, and is to be recognized, celebrated and honored.

Using volunteers, gather, organize and make available the history of the GLBT community and related individuals and groups in the SLC, Utah area. The history will include written materials, news articles, oral and video interviews, photographs, and other useful information. To the extent possible, materials will be digitized, indexed and categorized to enhance their usefulness and ensure their preservation. The gathered materials will be made available to interested persons at the Project’s Office or the TOHR Community Center. Certain information will be provided for use by TOHR in its newsletter and other communications. Historical excerpts will also be regularly posted to the Project’s Web site. The Project will provide speakers and materials to share the Project’s information with interested organizations. The Project with liaison with other archival sites to share ideas and appropriate information. Upon the completion of TOHR’s new Community Center, the Project will maintain a permanent office and display space which will enhance the availability of its archives and the ability to continue its work. In conjunction with TOHR, the Project will sponsor a Fall Speaker’s Bureau. This event will be an opportunity to seek financial support for the Project while at the same time bring into the Salt Lake area a notable individual who can add to our understanding of the GLBT community at-large.
